I agree. It's entirely different rooting for American athletes with sponsors, high-tech equipment, and a high-protein, low-fat diet, then consider the Ethiopian runner who's been training in a hut, lifting rocks, and barely scraping together enough to eat every day. The American is training for fame and fortune. For some countries, achieving Olympic success is the athlete's way out of poverty.

Gymnastics can feel like watching a ballet. I think that's why circus performers mesmerize an audience.

There is a wonderful familial feel to it when they do well, isn't it. A huge country with a lot of areas in which they excel has their passions divided, but a stellar athlete (or team) from a small country has their whole country (and many other small countries) all rooting for them. I like that.

It is very easy to take things out of context. As a UK resident I would like to just point out that last weeks "demonstrations" were held in London to exercise the populations freedom of speech, in particular the demonstrators were protesting about the severity of cuts to reduce the countries deficit. It was reported that there were between 250-400 thousand peaceful protesters walking through London. Unfortunately a minority of probably 2-3 hundred hooligans decided to use it as an excuse for civil unrest. Suggesting there were riots in London with calls for the death of the Crown prince out of context, make this seem that the UK is following the revolutions in the middle east. Which is evidently not the case. The majority of British Olympic venues are well on the way to being complete, tickets are on sale and going well. At these times of austerity should we be spending this much money on sport is a different question but here in the UK we don't see the world ending before we use our new stadiums.
